Pygmy Date Palm

Phoenix Roebelenii
The Pygmy Date Palm is a multi-trunk plant originally from Southeast Asia.  In the U.S. this Palm has become a very widely used and popular landscape palm. Slow growing, this palm is small, easy to care for and has a graceful crown that makes it a sought after tropical accent plant in gardens.

Pygmy Date Palms do quite well with regular watering and feeding and should not be allowed to dry out. They require partial to full sun, and if in full sun should be watered three times per week during the summer and twice a week in winter.

Use less water where partially shady, and in areas of heavy shade simply hose down the leaves twice a week to prevent problems with insects and dust accumulation.  The Pygmy Date Palm adapts easily to growing in containers, and although usually sold as a multi-trunk Palm, single trunks are available.

The Pygmy Date Palm Great works quite well in combination with Queen palms or around pools.  These Palms grow to a maximum height of around twelve feet, growing approximately six inches to one foot per year.

NEWS:

How to keep your Pygmy Date Palm happy during freezes:

Unless you are near the ocean where it's warmer, before a freeze mulch the bottom heavily to insulate the root ball and when a freeze alert threatens, place several spot lights at the base pointing upwards to keep the fronds warm.  As long as the ground does not freeze your Pygmy Date Palm should do well.
